His Eminence Mor Dionysius is Archbishop and Patriarchal Vicar of the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of the Eastern United States.

Born in Damascus, Syria, Archbishop Mor Dionysius (John Kawak) studied extensively in various locations and schools throughout his life. He studied economics for four years at the School of Economics at the University of Damascus. In 1980, he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Theological Studies from St. Ephrem, the Syriac Theological Seminary in Ma’arat Saydnaya in Syria. In 1993, he earned his master’s degree in Eastern and Oriental Liturgy at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, Italy. In 2002, he held Intensive University Training on Peace-Building at the Summer Peace-Building Institute at the Eastern Mennonite University in the state of Virginia.

In 2013, he attended the Diakonia and Church Development three-month program in Artus, Denmark. In 2015, Patriarch Aphrem II appointed him as the P:atrical Delegate for the Archdiocese and on May 27, 2016 he was enthroned as the Patriarchal Vicar. Archbishop Mor Dionysius resides in Paramus, New Jersey.
