Dr. Akyan Erdemir

Dr. Aykan Erdemir, is a member of the Turkish Parliament representing Bursa since June 2011. He is a member of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee and the EU Harmonization Committee. He has also served on the ad-hoc parliamentary committee on IT sector and the Internet. Dr. Erdemir sits on the executive boards of the Turkish-Swedish and Turkish-Kosovar Inter-parliamentary Friendship Groups. He is a member of the Scientific Board of the Social Democracy Association. His policy portfolio covers fundamental rights and freedoms, religious minorities, discrimination, hate crimes, and Turkish-EU and Turkish-U.S. relations.

Dr. Erdemir holds a master's in Middle Eastern Studies and a doctorate in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. He was a doctoral fellow at Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Erdemir worked as an assistant professor of sociology at Middle East Technical University (METU) between 2004 and 2011. He served as the Deputy Dean of the METU Graduate School of Social Sciences (2005-2010) and as the graduate director of the METU-Humboldt German-Turkish Masters in Social Sciences (2007-2011).

He is the recipient of following fellowships: Germany Meets Turkey (Institute for Cultural Diplomacy), Munich Security Conference - Young Leaders (Körber Stiftung), International Leaders Forum (National Democratic Institute), Aspen Scholar & Aspen Leadership Seminar (The Aspen Institute), Future International Leaders Programme (UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office).

He also has been involved in research projects funded by the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, U.S. National Science Foundation, European Union Framework Programs (6th and 7th), European Commission's European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, European Center for Minority Issues (ECMI), The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).

He has edited seven books and published numerous academic articles including "The Byzantine Mosque at Trilye: A Processual Analysis of Dominance, Sharing, Transformation and Tolerance" (History and Anthropology, 2011), "The Iconostasis of the Republican Mosque: Transformed Religious Sites as Artifacts of Intersecting Religioscapes" (International Journal of Middle East Studies, forthcoming), "Differential, Disguised and Deterritorialized:  The State Funding of Religion in Turkey" (State Financing of Religion, Ashgate, forthcoming).

Dr. Erdemir is a regular op-ed contributor to Ekometre, a monthly business and economics journal.
