His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel Geron of Chalcedon

Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople

His Eminence Metropolitan Emmanuel Geron of Chalcedon was born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete (Greece) on December 19, 1958. After studying in Greece, in France and in the USA, he assumed the duties of Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Belgium. For twenty years (1994-2014) he headed the Office of the Orthodox Church to the European Union. 

On January 20, 2003, he was unanimously elected Metropolitan of France by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, while at the same time he was appointed to represent the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Theological Dialogue between Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Academic Meetings with Islam and Judaism. On February 16, 2021, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected him Elder Metropolitan of Chalcedon.

He served as a board member of the KAICIID Dialogue Center in Portugal, President of the Conference of European Churches (CEC). He is currently co-moderator of Religions for Peace International, a member of the executive committee of the World Council of Churches, and is the chair of the board of the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities. He participated in many ecumenical and scientific conferences and recently received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens.
